Storing Tips

Storage tips:
We are collecting storage tips. These are only tips and not guarantees! The tips come from all over the internet:

  • Label boxes as you pack them on the top and sides for easy identification when they are in a stack.
  • Try to use boxes that are a uniform size, they’re easier to stack (remember; keep the heavy ones on the bottom and the light ones on top).
  • As a security precaution against theft, pack your storage unit so that your most valuable items are at the back, and purchase a high quality padlock to put on the door.
  • If you’re storing a refrigerator in your unit leave the door ajar. This will prevent mold from growing inside.
  • Try not to rush through your packing or your moving. Other than the mental discomfort, your goods might get damaged and spoil your self storage experience.
  • Use freestanding shelves to help organize your unit.
  • Store mirrors and paintings on end, not flat.
  • To prevent rusting rub a small amount of machine oil on metal tools, bicycles, and equipment. Drain and clean all debris from all equipment before you store them.
  • Purchase insurance. If your belongings are worth storing, they are worth insuring.
  • Do not pack your boxes so that they are too heavy to carry them. Especially when you are packing books.
  • Do not assume that your homeowners or renters insurance will cover your belongings while in storage. Purchase insurance for your stored items.
  • Plan your storage space. Place items in front that will be accessed frequently. Allow for walkways.
  • Leave a small space between the wall and your storage items to allow for ventilation.
  • Use a HIGH QUALITY lock, preferably a “disc lock”, for your unit.
  • Make up an inventory of your stored items. Keep this list in a safe place at home or in a safe deposit box.
  • Place your storage items on 2″ x 4″ boards or pallets to guard against dampness. Any concrete floor may become cold and damp.
  • Pack books flat to protect their spines.
  • Do not place boxes directly on concrete floors, but use pallets or skids to prevent moisture absorption.
  • We recommend that you periodically visit your Self Storage unit to check on your goods. Self storage management does not have access to customers’ self storage units, so checking the condition of your goods is up to you.
